RADSTOCK SILVER BAND.
Win £38, Silver Cup and Gold Medal at Bournemouth.
The Radstock Silver Prize Band did remarkably well at the Bournemouth Competitive Musical Festival on Saturday, when they competed in three events. In two of these they won first prizes, and in the other second, the cash prizes totalling £38 3s. In addition, they secured the silver challenge cup and one of three gold medals offered for soloists.
In the open championship section (test piece "Rienzi," Wagner), the first prize of £25 and two of three gold medals for soloists, went to Yeovil Town Band, the second prize of £15 being won by Radstock, whose baritone player, Frank Grist, secured the remaining gold medal. Five bands competed in this section.
In the second section, seven bands took part, the test piece being "A Summer Day" (Rimmer), and Radstock won the first prize of £20 and the silver challenge cup.
The remaining event, in which the Radstock Band was eligible to compete was the march for which competing bands chose their own composition. The Radstock Band played "Old Comrades," and won the first prize of three guineas. Five bands competed.
Mr. Thos. Valentine, whose training of the band has thus achieved these further successes, conducted the band on Saturday. The adjudicator was Capt. Manuel Bitton, late of the Royal Horse Guards.

Radstock's Band.
The Radstock Silver Prize Band, under the conductorship of Mr. T. Valentine, provided for the third time this summer the Sunday evening programme of music at Bath on Sunday last. The performance should have been given in the Victoria Park, but the inclement weather necessitated the use of the Pavilion, where there was a large attendance, and the work of the band was warmly applauded.
The well-varied programme of eight numbers was as follows:-March, "Entry of the Gladiators," (Fucik); selection, "Il Flauto Magico," (Mozart): cornet solo, "Until," (Sanderson), soloist, C. Yorath; chorus, "Comrades in Arms," (Adam): tone poem, "Finlandia," (Sibelius); excerpt, "Oh, Maritana" (from "Maritana"), (Wallace); air varie, "Eventide," (Rimmer); selection, "William Tell," (Rossini).
For the Palace. On Monday evening the Radstock Silver Band had its first practice of the test piece for the forthcoming contest at the Crystal Palace, London, where the band will be competing again this year.
The test piece for the third section of the festival, in which Radstock is grouped with 31 other bands, is "Gems of Melody," extracts adapted from the works of Liszt. It is a difficult but beautiful piece of music, and will occupy the whole time of the band until the festival on Saturday, September 26th.
There is also a brief history of the National BB Contest on page 7 of this issue.
